What The Hack - Kids

From What The Wiki?!

WTH is a great place for families with children. No need to struggle finding a place for your kids to stay over or not coming at all, because you have children. On the campsite in Liempde is a lot to discover in the villages, enough space to play in the forest and on the open fields. If you would like to take your children with you, you are very welcome to do so! :)

As large parts of WTH, the kids program is also growing within the community and is not going to be a "drop-your-child-and-forget-about-it" facility. It is supposed to make the stay for your kids at the camp more agegroup-specific fun and, as a sideeffect, enable parents to participate in selected lectures and workshops.

FYI: Kids aged 0-7 get in for free. Tickets for kids aged 8-14 are half whatever the regular fee is. For example: if you buy a ticket before July 1, a ticket for a 10 year old child would be 70 Euros. Anyone 15 or over needs to pay the full ticket price. Kids aged 0-14 need to be accompanied by a responsible person aged 18 or over.

How: DIY Organisation of Children Program

Children's activities are organised by the parents themselves, who take turns in taking care of each others children and organise some fun activities for their kids.

All easy-peasy. For the organisation of the program, sharing ideas and the contact to each other in advance, this site is available for you. The organisation of WTH is helping with scheduling space for the program. For contact with the organisation team, feel free to send a mail to secretariaat@whatthehack.org

Where: Space

  • The whole Landgoed Velder is one big nature playground for children. There are large fields on the terrain available for any kind of outdoor sports, from ball to water games. The forest surrounding the camp should be also an intriguing place for your kids.
  • If a room is needed or in the unlikely case of rainy days ;) the organisation can schedule space in a tent for children's program, like pottery, fingerpainting, taking old TVs apart or whatever ideas parents have.
  • If there is an interest in it, we can mark a section on the campground for tents of families with kids.

What areas will be off-limits for children? - Sn

Well, I fully trust the parents to set the limits for their children. :) -- Bine 23:46, 30 Jun 2005 (CEST)

Location Family Village
The Family Village location is set to 'A5/NW!!' Hairyscary 21:51, 13 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Hi everyone, as you might have noticed, I put some work into CampsiteLocations. Currently the Wireless Village is going to be located in that same A5 SouthEast corner, I never suggested/decided this though. I suggested A5 NortWest corner for family/kids village.. but noticed this does not match your planning.. it might not be optimal at all. There seems to be two options now:

1) Switching the places, I won't mind.. not sure what the other say though. But this isn't about opinions.. it is more about finding the best solution for all the folks :)

2) Locating the family/kids village somewhere north on E1. This field will have some power and network. It is near the sanitary facilities too. And it will (estimation) be more calm than A5. Additionaly it seems to be one of the rare spaces that seems to provide some shade, at least during the morning hours. Currently there only seems to be the Sl@ckersS@lon on E1.

hi people, brought the question on where to place the family village up in the core-org-meeting tonight. the following seems reasonable:

  • F-south: not as loud (freighttrain) as i thought first - there is quite some distance and forest in between. the OpenBSD-village is fine with it, the campspot will be about 80-100 m south of the OpenBSD party-tent, so not much disturbance. the very south part of F is without drainage, so in the unlikely case that it rains cats and dogs, it might be smart to place the tents in the dry sector a bit mor north (see colordifference in the satellite-picture). showers and toilets on G are not too far away, electricity is provided and the field B for all kinds of games for children is directly neighbouring.
  • E1 is also a rather quiet solution and timo, our power-coordinator, is ok with a family-village there. just let him know what you need power for.
  • A5 NW-corner is also fine.

let me know and i'll have it marked on our map. lief groetjes, Bine 23:59, 4 Jul 2005 (CEST)

I think A5 is best because it's the most centrally located. SW or NW if SW is taken. -- Sn 16:35, 5 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Had a chat with JanJoost about it... A5/NW is fine with us. Maybe its a good idea to setup the tents into a (half)circle so keeping an eye on the kids is easy Hairyscary 19:52, 5 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Who: The ParentsTeam

You want to be part of the group of parents that looks after each others children? Please list your name and mail-address here to get and stay in contact. You may also want to put down the age of your children to make the planning for activities for certain agegroups a bit easier.

Camping at the family village, might be a nice idea. Please leave your name if u do so at: Family Village it might be easier to arrange some activities together or to keep an eye on the kids.

What: Ideas

You've got an idea for the children's program? Here's the place to share it.

  • I can make baloon animals, I can take entertain kids for aprox 30 min with it :) The coordinator of the Kids Team should contact me if this is a nice idea :) Aldert Hazenberg 16:23, 28 Jun 2005 (CEST)

OK lets set a day and time Hairyscary 20:19, 5 Jul 2005 (CEST)

  • Would not mind to help out baking pancakes... :) Aldert Hazenberg 16:29, 28 Jun 2005 (CEST)

OK lets set a day and time! Hairyscary 20:19, 5 Jul 2005 (CEST)

  • Ill bring 2 small tv's, with VCR and DVD, a PS/2 with some games and a few video tapes for kids and a big 4x8 bungalow tent ofcourse ;-) Hairyscary 14:40, 29 Jun 2005 (CEST)
  • The Astronomy Tent [1] will be equipped with a beamer and projection screen for planetarium demos and lectures. Initial plan is to do an interactive lecture for kids each afternoon and one after dinner, each lasting one hour max. If anyone wants to request a special subject for a lecture, please do so as early as possible, so we can try to bring relevant demo equipment to WTH. The Astro Village Calendar [2] will be used to publish all Astro Village activities, so you may want to keep an eye on it.
  • The Astronomy Tent [3] will have two computer microscopes at hand. Kids will be able to bring stuff in to look at and take pictures of. Maybe one microscope can be made mobile, but we'll have to think about managing something like this. Technically there is no problem at all: It's just a backpack containing all the necessary equipment. It's sensible procedures for its use that will have to be hammered out. Do you think this mobile microscope thing is a great idea? Let us know your view............
  • Since there is an Astro Village, we might need some rockets to confuse those guys..;-) Open fire or explosives are forbidden, so we gonna use water instead. I am building waterrockets for myself, but it would be nice to have the kids launching a few of themselves. Using 0.5L PET bottles and a bit of pressure will shoot the rocket up to 20m. The sports area should be big enough. Im still working on a easy way to connect *the engine*, but mom or dad have to help the kids. To be continued. Hairyscary 20:42, 5 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Fixed it! waterrockets The reason for a nozzle quick release mechanism is safety, a stopper design works also, but u never know when it shoots off the stopper. Hairyscary 18:19, 7 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Who does What When

Location of the kids field

I did have contact with the organisation about a location where families could camp together. A5 would be the designated area. Looking at the map. I prefer Left under on A5. Hairyscary

Harry or anyone, if you have time, would you please set up a Wikipage for a Family-Village to organise that part better? Thanks! -- Bine 01:51, 1 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Im willing to maintain a Familiy-village wiki page, if u moving this page or the last three parts of it, overthere. Ive already got some emails of other villages, having kids activities. eg. The lockpicking. If there are more kids, registred!!! more villages might be interessted in organising things. Like u suggested earlier: If a room is needed or in the unlikely case of rainy days ;) the organisation can schedule space in a tent for children's program, like pottery, fingerpainting, taking old TVs apart or whatever ideas parents have. I had contact with Yolanda about a kids tent, she will contact me again. But.. the how and what, is depending on how many kids there will be.. For the *babysit thing*... a list about who wants to babysit when and where, might be handy. Having an own kids-tent would allow some *drop and forget* But still thats all depending on the amount of kids and parents willing to take care of things. A drop and forget for the small ones.. 0-3 years.. i wouldnt recommend a facility like that. For a *drop and forget* 4-12 y/o are the parents theirselves responsible, only a central place might be arranged. Hairyscary 12:44, 2 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Hi :) ooops, sorry for confusing. when i think of a kids-village, i don't mean that it is going to be a drop&forget facility, but rather just an area, where the private tents of the families are set up, a place that meets the specific needs of families, a place where children can play with each other in the center of that village and always someone is around. A5, left-under would be great - as you suggested - because it has still electricity, is rather quiet and relatively close to the sanitary facilities with water (WC + showers). who wants to join that dorpje with their kids - fine. who prefers another spot, also fine. program-like activities for kids will be in remote villages as we said before. -- Bine 16:16, 2 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Agenda

Moved to Family Village Found that a more logical place, since this is more a place for discussion. ;-) Hairyscary 20:19, 5 Jul 2005 (CEST)
