Weather satellite image reception demo

From What The Wiki?!

We will demonstrate the reception of low earth orbiting satellite weather satellite (NOAA series) image reception using a sound card and/or an embedded (Coldfire based) uClinux system at the following times

Date Hour Duration Friday 29th, 17h58 (11min25s) & 19h04 (11min30s)
Saturday 30th, 18h40 (11min29s)
Sunday 31st, 08h30 (11min24s) & 12h41 (11min33s)

These are satellites that move from horizon to horizonin about 11 minutes so don't be late for the demo.

In the mean time, a preliminary result obtained today (Thursday) for satellite passing too close to horizon to provide a really good image is available at wth07281603.jpg (taken Thursday July 28th at 6 PM from the wth camping ground).

We are located in the green neon light area, close to the lock-picking guys -- look for 2 guys with a funny 1.5 m high antenna.

Update 29/07: MISTAKE IN THE PASS PREDICTION
somehow I miscalculated the pass schedules. Here is the corrected version:
2005-07-29 UTC

Satellite Local Time UTC Time Duration
NOAA 12 07-29 17:36:12 15:36:12 15:17
NOAA 15 07-29 19:02:10 17:02:10 15:23

2005-07-30 UTC

NOAA 12 07-30 17:11 THIS OBSERVATION WILL TAKE PLACE NEXT TO TENT 1
NOAA 15 07-30 18:38:28 16:38:28 15:21

2005-07-31 UTC

 NOAA 15 07-31 08:28:31 06:28:31 15:15
NOAA 17 07-31 12:39:58 10:39:58 15:26

Having observed that from my tent I get poor northward reception (I REALLY want to get an image all the way to Greenland and Iceland) I'll try from now on (07/30, 2 PM) receiving from the field next to tent 1. Another image (NOAA 17, 07/30 @ 1 PM) is available at wth07301104borders.jpg (expect more wet weather this evening I think ;)

Images from the July 30th passes are available at wth07301513.jpg (before processingp) and wth07301513borders.jpg (after adding borders and land boundaries using wxtoimg)

We *might* be here again tomorrow (sunday) at 12:30 (noon) for a last pass of NOAA 17 over WTH.

[info]: I've User:Audric attended the nice tutorial, taken pictures and I've published them online at http://media.evolutiva.com/gallery/wth-2005/DSC_3276 (tnx again)

For info, you can find informations on this topic (manuscipt of an article to be published in European Journal of Physics) at http://jmfriedt.free.fr (Satellite Eavesdropping ...) or juste contact me at friedtj AT free DOT fr

I mentionned during my talk on Wednesday (uClinux for embedded devices -- see http://jmfriedt.free.fr/wth.pdf for the slides of the talk) and during the presentations that we are working on building a fully embedded uClinux based image receiver, based on the SSV Dil/Net 5280 board. So far we have the audio-frequency fully software based data acquisition working, and we still need to finalyze data storage and display (processing also works fine). Here is one image taken with the uClinux board on Thursday July 28th (unfortunately the data acquisition using the PC sound card failed so you cannot compare with what would have been obtained with wxtoimg -- the main difference being that at the moment we don't decode line feed for properly aligning the image) Image available at wth_sat2907-17h36uclinux.jpg
