Peter Watkins double special:
22:30 THE WAR GAME (1965)
Peter Watkins' incendiary 'mockumentary' - long banned by the BBC who funded it - preconstructs the effects of a nuclear attack on England. This is no 'talking heads' documentary. Instead, Watkins gets biopolitical and takes you inside the nuclear firestorm 'moment-by-moment' - from the slow creep of radiation sickness to the ensuing tactics of military rule and 'condoned exterminations' inside the State of Emergency. Its a dark and prescient film chronicalling social disenintegration and war. Winner of Oscar award for best documentary (1966).
PLUS
23:30 PUNISHMENT PARK (1971)
Pter Watkins' film vividly imagines a world where political dissidents are pursued in scorching heat by the forces of law and order through a desert landscape in a 'game' devised by the US Government. Think Guatanamo Bay meets Big Brother (the TV show that is).....
