Thawte WOT

From What The Wiki?!

The thawte Web of Trust (WOT)[1] was devised by thawte to promote a culture of trust. It is a Certification system that allows your identity to be validated for use in your Personal Certificate. This is done through approaching a recognized thawte Notary who, on being shown the relevant proof, will validate your ID. You, in turn, can then become a thawte Notary yourself, and begin validating others' identities.

Thawte is a CA similair to CAcert, but then a commercial one. They do however give out free e-mail certificates via a Web Of Trust, similair to that of CAcert.

Signing Party

Number3 can be found at the CAcert parties, but I will give notarize for Twathe as well if you like.

Note that you can use your Thawte information to get CAcert points! (see: http://wiki.cacert.org/wiki/ThawteNotary)

Prerequisites to get assured

  1. Create a Thawte account at https://www.thawte.com/cgi/personal/wot/enroll.exe if you don't have one.
  2. Bring a print of the WoT form with you. You need for each assurement you do one completed form (You will need multiple to become an assurer yourself) AND a photocopy of your photo ID.
  3. You need multiple copies of the form in order to be assured by multiple assurers, and thus gain a sufficient number of trust points. There will be some blank forms available for people who forgot to do so. However our supplies will be limited.
  4. At least one (1) official ID with your picture on it (passport, driver license, governmental identity card) is required to do an assurance. It is much better to present two (2) pieces of picture IDs (most Assurers give then more points).
  5. More information on the procedure: https://www.thawte.com/wot/procedures.html

Comparing Thawte and CAcert

Comparing Thawte and CAcert:

  • Thawte a South Africa based company, belongs to Verisign. Their root certs are in the common browsers/mailers/OS-es. However the only thing they give for free is e-mail certs.
  • CAcert is free and open, lets you create all kind of certs, but their root certs are not in the common browsers at this time.
