I had a wonderful time staying at WhatTheHack for almost a week. It was a long week, but boy did we feel 'empty' when everyone left on Sunday and Monday!

For four years after HAL2001 I was looking forward to the next event, with the ambiance and the people in mind. About half a year ago I learned about the organisation of WhatTheHack and for a few months now I tried helping out organising this. Even more than with HAL2001, I saw how you people welcomed me, gave me this fuzzy feeling: I had a chance of doing fun stuff (and some not-partiulary-interesting things as well).

As some of us agreed on the Monday afterwards: perhaps we didn't work that fast, but sure as hell we learned fast: looking back, I couldn't imagine any other kind of people pulling off a thing like this. So little experience, so little time and organisation, and still we all learned to do a fairly good job that would have taken others, even professionals, years of preparation. We sometimes faced ridiculous problems no-one had thought of, but within an hour some fokes were fixing it.

I'll try something dangerous here: mentioning people that I noticed, inevitably leaving out people which I shouldn't. Oh, well, but I do want to tell about Eric, officially "logistics coordinator", but I think I'm not alone when saying WhatTheHack wouldn't be there without him. His phone rang more than a callcenter operator's, yet he was able to respond to about every question that came up. HermanB stayed relaxed and fun to work with even when driving hundreds of kilometers from early in the morning to late at night and getting bugged by me. Juerd did a great job in charge of the supplies, as silly as the job may appear to some. Dougie came as a volunteer for the Infodesk and small stuff, but when the doctor of the always active CERT fokes couldn't make it, he volunteered to be a doctor for the first days. Thumbs up! Oh, talking about the medical staff (I unfortunately was their most loyal visitor, due to my bacterial infection).. Frans was the sweetest thing, always there to help. Oh, did anyone notice how much Oversight did, day and night, holding great responsibility yet staying fun all the time? With the help of his lovely wife. Then there was Charlotte with her bright smile, coordinating the Infodesk together with Yolanda who was kind enough to buy me a bread (don't ask). Reinoud was a champ in talking to people, nuff said. Oh, lets not forget the nice people from Iconiq: they really were professionals at the speakers desk, relieving us from quite some work (see? Not everything *has* to be a chaos!) while being great company.

Literally milions worth of equipment was scattered over the camp, barely protected, and nothing went wrong. We all came along pretty smoothly. The term 'hackers' may be smudged, looking at you fokes I can't think of a beter term than 'cyber-hippies'. I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend any lectures, just too damn busy 18 hours a day. I'll catch up with that, I'm not even that keen with computers, just happy to have a party with you guys.

I want to have wth every year!!! I had a great time at wth. Loads of really nice people. I didnt recognize anyone argueing or in a bad mood. Interesting lectures(well i missed many, because i am not used to the dutch ganja :D) . It was a pitty that i didnt manage to mix my records due to the above mentioned reasons. Anyway i feel a bit sad that it is all over now.

WTH just was great. Thousands of smart, funny and very friendly people, interesting lectures (got many new ideas for some projects :), good food (thanx to the guys with the biological stuff!) and a very nice enivronment (especially all those colored lights at night, which made a wonderful impression together). In short: I felt like I wanted to stay there forever from the first day!

WhatTheHack was great! I loved everything about it: the atmosphere, the presentations, workshops and most of all the 'social thing'. Hope to see you all next time!

Goodbye!

Just want to say goodbye to all. WTH sure was an outstanding experience for me (especially as it was my first hacker-outdoor-camp so far). See you in 2009!

I have to thank all the volunteers that made this event possible and of course the organizers: keep up the good work! Special thanks to the nice neighbours from Kiel (the Freenet-Programmers) who helped me out with electricity and network. Unfortunately we did not exchange our contact information. If you happen to read this I would be glad to hear from you.

Alex

thank you...

I expected a lot from what the hack.. I knew it was going to be massive.. but it even topped my expectations.. WAY too big.. but in a good way..

Thank you all for making this happen.. Thanks to all the volunteers that worked their asses off Thanks to everyone I've met.. it was amazing... I hope to see you all soon again..

-thanks-

Sebastian

Well, the time at WTH was amazing. I arrived at Saturday 23th, with many of the Chaoswelle People.Just after we arrived Fenrir asked us to put up the Fire Lanes on all Fields. So we started to set them up, only stop to set up our main tent in Area H. It was avery nice to work with Fenrir and the other and we had a lot of fun. On Sunday we finished setting up the Fire Lanes. After that i started working for the CERT. We had much to do there, but i remember Oversight who was every time accessible and hadn't got much sleep, i think. He waked me up twice in the night, but it was nice to work with him. So WTH was a lot of work but much more fun.So, thanks folks and see ya next time.

THANK YOU! I cant believe, thats its all over. It was so great, that i cant find words. The best invested 120 euro in my life, I can only repeat that. Beeing a volunteer made a lot of fun and I want to thank all people for making WTH happen! I also hope to see everybody again, perhaps on the afterparty :) Special thanks to the BSD people who sold me the bikini for a pretty good price ;P (I got it for 25 without making Photos! Muahaha!) Now i have to wait 4 years once more :( THANK YOU.

Thank you for the really great organisation! I just wanna excuse me for the fact, we couldn't take those nice 2 girls from the rehash/aqua village to switzerland. But there was just no enough place... Sorry! But we like to meet you next time! So, come to the CCC Camp in 2007 or to WTH (H.O.P.E) 2009???? However, I wish everyone, and everybody a good time, write good code, and if you are familiar with OpenBSD, cya next time at the Humppa BAR :))

First of all, thanks to all volunteers. Without you, no WTH. Everyone I met: thanks. You were great. The guy who drove me and LadyFrost to Boxtel, when he in fact was on his way back to Boxtel: thanks. All the cool people there: thanks.

Also, webmind. Thanks for pulling me and LadyFrost out of our tent and introducing us to all the cool people we met. Thanks for fixing the ride to Boxtel train station with T1000 (thanks for the ride, T1000), even though you had to work on that part for quite a while. Also, thanks for being a good friend.

Ozamosi 6 August 2005 13:48 (CEST)

Thanks to everyone (continiuing on ozamosis thanks)

Everyone ozamosi said thank you to - thank you from me too.

Some people get special thanks from me:

Jeedi, for changing my view of alcohol by showing me that people can be both drunk and nice ;)

rehash, thanks for letting us mend our broken powercord with your tools.

scb2, thanks for the shirt, I'm wearing it now :)

maiky, for recognizing me.

dapke, for fetching me and oz @ eindhoven in the middle of the night :)

BugBlue, both for being a pain in the ass and for claiming I was too young to be at WTH ;)

Everybody that hugged me :)

..

Well, it's already almost one (1!) week after the final day of WTH. And although we were just daytime presentation visitors, I did get the special feeling by the time of the WTH PGP key sign party. Some type of atypical warmth and urge to be there earlier next time and volunteer a bit... I know I missed a lot of the cool stuff that went on outside the presentations (but there are stories and pictures and somtimes videos, etc), I would very much be a part of that next time!

VERY, VERY much thanks for the whole WTH experience; 't was a whole lot more than just some presentations, some tents and networking..!! (a state of mind?!)

w00t!

I had the time of my life at WTH.. expierenced tons of great things, met lots of fantastic people, started a community, learned that tents aren't waterproof, and that too much beer is in fact not good for you... I'm really really really looking forward to 2009! Cheers everyone!

My special thanks go to English Pete and What the Glen for making this camp possible, the great folks at What the Bar and What the News, especially Marita and Bine, for giving me something to do during the camp, Rop, for being such a great interview partner, the people at Rehash for sharing, the Christian missionaries for spicing up our camp, the ice cream kid, the guys at CCC for the cigarettes, the folks at NOC for bearing with us during the DOS attack we experienced, Katja for the special show, Jacco for his forgiveness, Brenno de Winter for the great intro on cryptography, all the other volunteers, and everyone at AquaVille, especially CraHan, Falk, dieppiej, KaelinX and NakedCellist. You folks rock!

Dieppiej 7 August 2005 14:41 (CEST)

gracias!

Wow, what can I say. I was blown off my feet at the conference. Everyone did such an amazing job and it was wonderful to create a space for non-stop, multiple connections... I would say that not a detail was missed. The aesthetics of tents, the amazing rehash folks filming everything, the positive energy, the various villages, and even the rain added a drmatic flair. I will hold fon memories of the event for years to come. Here is a small write up from my blog http://healthhacker.org/satoroams/?p=508 and again thanks to every last person who made this so special.

Thx

to all the people who made WTH what it was, a fantastic event.

The five days at WTH were over way to fast. I enjoyed my stay and was amazed that noone left early because of the rain. The cold showers in the morning were not a big problem, at least they helped waking up. Yes, I know there were showers with warm water, but somehow i always ended up in a shower block with only cold water.

Regards to the guys from Dortmund(Jens, Sascha, Anika ...) that endured the rain together with us at w00tstock. Hopefully you have put that virus filter to a good use ;o)

See you in 4 years (actually there will be the CCC summer camp in 2007).

Nothing Stolen, no Problems we couldn't laugh at...

WOW,

It has been proven again, hackers are the nicest people... Once again (just like HAL2001) it has completely amazed me NOTHING was stolen at WTH.

Problems? Sure, we got plenty but there wasn't anything that couldn't be solved with a smile or little talk....

THANKS y'all for giving me a great holiday.

Oversight 8 August 2005 15:23 (CEST)

free hugs!

as i expected it was pretty cool, well organized and the wlan fucked up ;) friendly people, strange language and pink police men. Why dont you do it twice a year? :)

thanks to all the people who organized it and hu give/received a hug.

Enno 8 August 2005 15:28 (CEST)

The rain did not spoil the fun!

We had a great time @ WTH... We've met a lot of interesting people, seen a lot of interesting lectures, had fun in the sun, danced in the rain, had a "few" beers an a lot of laughs. The atmosphere was nice, the WTH campsite looked amazing at night: respect to the light-artists (!!!). We came by camper but most of the day (and night) we 'dwelled' around the main tents...

Thanks to the MegaBit tent, we loved the arcades. Thanks to the 'tokenring-bar', nice to be there. Thanks to the 'security.nl' bar, nice tunes dudes. Thanks to '#fooBar', a nice 'chillage'...

Thanks to all the people who made WTH...

Ciao!!

Thank you to the Holland contingent

All of you guys that let me camp out with you in the A1 area and then bugged out on Sunday while I was attending talks, (you all work or worked for the same company), thank you and email if you want to stay in touch.

Wonderful..

I had a great time, thanks to all of the organisation and volunteers, and all the nice people. Thanks WTH hero's like Hanno, Jacco, Reinoud, Rop, and so many many more. And a special thanks for the wonderful people of aquaville, which felt like home.. hope to see you guys soon.. maybe at the ccc?

Glen

I remember very little of what happened. I'm still being told of things that I did that I find unbelievable. I am sure of one thing, even though the all the work I took on left me hallucinating and randomly crying, this was the most fun I've ever had in my whole life.
