Do we need PMR devices or is DECT sufficient?

BugBlue 09:31, 29 Jun 2005 (CEST)

If you want to communicate in a short time with more than one other, you shouldn´t use dect. The CERT has done some trainings at the 21C3 and the use of pmr instead of dect, was more successfull.

But you can use the Dect phones to alarm a group of people.

Maybe, we should declare at least one PMR channel for the Orga. Some things, like checking the fire extinguishers are also done by the CERT, so there should be some Communication between these VolunteerTeams. --Curry 00:26, 1 Jul 2005 (CEST)

One problem with PMRs and radio comms in general is that you need adherence to a radio telephony code to make it useful. At least, if you are with more than a few people, not all of whom know each other, and you want to accomplish something together. Radio telephony rules range from dead simple to so arcane you need a year in school to learn all the fscking numbers. We only need something simple, but we need to be sure we all have the same set of rules, and that we use them. It is a good idea to write them down and require everybody using the radios to read them and practice for a bit if they're unfamiliar with it.

Another problem is that you need those PMR sets distributed. Depending on how the people are organized you may need one or more channels. And there's only eight of them (the subchannels are virtual in that they use tone sequences to filter out what you want and don't want to hear) which can interfere with types of traffic trying to get through.

To sum up the above two paragraphs: Also having PMRs may be more useful than only DECT, but with more than a few people, they need more planning to use effectively, as well. Bounce 02:06, 1 Jul 2005 (CEST)

I'll bring two PMRs if required, plus two spare DECT phones. I'll want them back at the end! - soapy 22 July

Night vision goggles?

Anyone bringing night vision goggles? Might come in handy.

Maybe just portable lights will do.... something like 150 watt or maybe more :-) BugBlue 21 July 2005 19:38 (CEST)

I'll bring some fun stuff - IR/radio detection beacons, PIR alarms, switching security alarms, 10 million candle power light, you know, all the fun stuff... - soapy 22 July

Bikes (dutch,sorry)

Hoi,
