AbstractDetails on the science of information retrieval as it applies to Web-based search engines, file search and bibliographic systems. Once a document is harvested, how is it parsed, weighted and ranked? When a query is submitted, what algorithms are used to decide which documents best match the query? A focus on the internal algorithms and processes available to such systems, with information on how to make or tune your own system. We will work through some examples of ranking algorithms, starting with simple binary ranking, then into more sophisticated vector and probabilistic ranking. The goal is for participants to understand the science that goes into search systems.
