Insect repellent

From What The Wiki?!

You'll probably encounter:

  • Wasps (especially in your drink)
  • Mosquitos
  • Flies (if you're near any cows or did not take a shower)
  • Ants (they're everywhere)
  • Ticks
    • There will most likely be ticks in the area, so you should get an immunisation against
tick-borne encephalitis if you aren't immunised already.
    • (How much of a threat is this - is this area known for tick-borne encephalitis? -sn)
    • This study claims that there is no evidence of the TBE virus in wildlife in the Netherlands. The area is known for ticks, but it seems they are "clean". Also, there are no known cases of TBE infections in the Netherlands, so the risk is probably minimal.
    • Be aware that the ticks often carry Borrelia Burgdoferi, which causes the Lyme-Disease. This is a horrible disease, as it is way too often not diagnosed correctly, especially in middle-europe. The Estimate new infection rate in germany is 100000 - 200000 infections/year. The only treatment is heavy use of antibiotics (see the treatment section there to get a feeling of why it is important to know about the Lyme-Disease. Antibiotics treatment for over a year (for the chronic case) is absolutly no fun, and that even doesn't guarantee a complete healing. If you encouter a tick, immediatly remove it correctly and watch out for symptoms).
    • can anyone give some does and don'ts on removing ticks?

A real hacker makes his/her own insect repellent:

But we would advise you to buy it in the shop anyway :)

The best insect repellent is DEET, most commercial repellents contain this in a smaller percentage, but if you are hard-core you use it in the pure form, which was also used by the soldiers in vietnam etc. It's very powerful stuff in its pure form and it can burn your skin when you're too sensitive, also its not advised to expose your skin to the sun for too long after applying it. I believe you can get it in its pure form at the pharmacy.
