AbstractThe development goals and action plan put forward by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) constitutes a set of guidelines for externalmedia development policy for African newsrooms. Considering the rapid growth of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Africa, specifically the use of mobile telephony, this presentation argues that the internal development strategies of African newsroom should coincide with the goals of the WSIS and must be supported by internal development policies. African media organisations must therefore be mindful of theories of policy, knowledge management and media convergence in order to ensure the policies developed are appropriate to an African context and are sustainable over time.
