Hacking in Brazil and EstudioLivre
From What The Wiki?!
These two conferences were actually just one divided in two parts. On the first one Claudio Prado explained how these project of a digital cultural department in the cultural ministry in Brazil was made, and what are the major ideas behind it. The major idea is presented as "Tropicalize the Digital World" which means the use of digital skills to develop culture programs major directed to the integration of marginalized groups. They call it "tropicalize" as a direct reference to the sixties culture movement in Brazil that was called "Tropicalism" and that was, among others, made by Gilberto Gil (the ministry of culture). This movement broke some important culture rules and ideas of how brazilian culture should presented her self and her authentic" music. This program desires to make the same but this time in the Digital World.
On the second part Luís Fagundes and Ian Robert Lawrence (this one is living and developing projects in Amazonia) showed some examples of initiatives developed by this department. And one of those is precisely the Estudio Livre (http://estudiolivre.utopia.com.br), a major studio where people can record and share their music. This studio is in fact a program and one of the examples showed has a music made on purpose by Gilberto Gil, the ministry of culture. Another example was the construction of networks and ciber-sallons made of recycled computers.
