From What The Wiki?!

Contents

What we need

  • Structure for 'What The News' (tech & content) incl. structure for cooperating with other Teams (broadcasting, radio, stream, etc.)
  • WikiNews / MediaWiki
  • Tools to upload multimedia files
  • Tool to add Tags to files (archiving)
  • Creative Commons License

System / Software

  • Wikinews / Mediawiki and Rehash Fileserver
  • Tools for uploading mediafiles to the fileserver

File Management

Managing the files - where should what be uploaded?

  • text: Wiki. Later the articles will be transferred to a longlasting and stable site.
  • photos, video, audio: ReHash Fileserver. Putting in the Wiki links to albums on the fileserver of ReHash and displaying only selected pics in the Wiki seems best, because Wiki is not made for uploading many pics/albums. For video and audio files, we should upload them too on the fileserver and just put links in the Wiki, because documentation gets much easier when everything is in one place.
  • linklist to external media/blogs: Wiki. I'm no techie, but is there a chance to put those sites (caches?) on our archive-site later on, so we don't have "404 not found" messages when clicking on the links a year later?

Daniel, please explain how it will work, what we need to do. -- Bine 21:06, 1 Jul 2005 (CEST)

Formats

Formats on Frontpage:

  • Topstories ("Top 10") as teasers on the WikiNews Frontpage
  • Chronological list of articles ("Latest Submissions" + "Event chronology")
  • "Calendar": announcements for upcoming events (ad hoc info of villages, etc.)
  • "Stories in progress" on the specific villages to give an overall documentation of what has happened in on village over the 4-5 days.

I tend to think a simple form with fill-in-gaps for author and name of reported event, and multiple-choice/multiple-answer (tick boxes) for date/time of reported event, the content, media and text categories would be good.

  • Date/Time of submission (automated)
  • Date/Time of reported event (for example: Day 1, 28 July 2005, morning/afternoon/evening)
  • Author
  • Keywords or name of Lecture, Workshop, Party, Project (for example: "Biometrics", "Hash Functions", etc) This point is only a vague first idea - I'm sure there are better solutions. plus: it is overlapping with the categories below. Will there be a full text search available in the archive? - Bine
  • Category Content: Which categories do we have? We need to keep it simple enough for reasons of usability, but complex enough for not sinking into chaos with the documentation part.
  • Cryptography
  • Open Source
  • Security
