Software for the freedom of speechMany developers involved in dyne.org and freaknet.org free software projects will be presenting new software releases for MuSE (radiostreaming), FreeJ (vision mixer) and the ongoing development of dyne:II distribution, the next generation of dyne:bolic.
DescriptionThe Freaknet Medialab is an autonomous laboratory of informatic in the deep south of Europe (Catania, Sicily), build entirely with computersrecycled from the '70s and hardware donations; established 10 years ago, it runs offering free access to the net, free emails and shell accounts, and various workshops on a voluntary basis. The Dyne.org network is an online free software atelier gathering artisans of different kinds, developing tools for media production andhardware recycling, trying to raise social and political awareness in the way software architectures are built. These two initiatives, one physical and one networked, are closely connected and in constant growth: communities are born around them, while they kept being completely non-profit, focusing on cultural and social aspects in software development, rather than business. FreeJ is a tool for realtime video manipulation, featuring an old school console interface and very efficient multilayered output. The new release being prepared will include some juicy features for video and TV makers wanting to mix and stream video on the internet. MuSE is an audio mixer and streaming engine accepting input from various sources, capable to broadcast at various bitrates on multiple servers. It offers a couple of graphical interfaces and the latest version will include its port as a native OSX/Carbon application - which makes it theonly free streaming tool on the Apple platform. Dyne:II is the new core foundation of the dyne:bolic live distribution, a slick and efficient tool for media production, that can be used on oldcomputers and Xbox game consoles. The version I got really widespread across the world, employed in many media centers, recording studios andradios. We'll discuss the visions driving the development of the version II.
