Creative Commons Nederland

Creative Commons is working to promote the use of Creative Commons licenses and tools around the world. Creative Commons promotes the creative re-use of intellectual and artistic works - whether owned or in the public domain - by empowering authors and audiences to publish and find content that can be used on clearly marked, more flexible terms.

To this end, Creative Commons has developed a set of copyright licenses that fill in the spectrum of possibilities between full copyright - all rights reserved - and the public domain - no rights reserved. The licenses enable authors to keep their copyright while inviting certain uses of their works - a "some rights reserved" copyright. Specifically, the Creative Commons licenses enable creators of creative works to allow others to, for example: copy & redistribute the work only; to make derivative works; or to make derivative works provided that those derivatives are licensed on the same license terms. Since the early 2004 the licenses have been launched in 10 member states of the European Union, including the Netherlands, and translations are in process in 10 more. Globally, over 23 million people have adopted the Creative Commons licenses.

This presentation will focus on recent developments around Creative Commons in the Netherlands and on an international level. A special focus will be on the relation between Creative Commons and the Free Software movement which is one of the most important inspirations of the Creative Commons project.
