Chipknip

From What The Wiki?!

The Chipknip is an electronic wallet: a chip on a banking card (or prepaid card) to do small transactions in the Netherlands. It differs from other electronic payment systems: you have to charge it with money before you can spend it (so no connection with your bank is needed, and no extra money is charged for the payment).

Although almost everywhere in The Netherlands you can pay with creditcard or PIN (Maestro etc.), you might want a chipknip:

  • parking machines in some cities (Rotterdam) only accept chipknip
  • it works fast
  • it's secure
  • it works with every ticket machine for traintickets

That been said, it's a hassle to buy a chipknip (and a great risk to your privacy). You can buy a prepaid one, but it's unclear where - especially for tourists. You can try the Tourist Office, a bank or EGI, the company that is responsible.
